Embroidery on Silk Fabrics
The
embroidery thread traditionally used for embroidery on silk fabric
is silk as only silk can match the richness of silk. off late viscose
or rayon threads are used to give certain effects to the pattern.
There are four important embroidery
centers in China. They are Hunan, Jiangsu, Guangdong and Sichuan, each famous
for its own particular style. Therefore Xiang (Hunan), Shu (Sichuan), Su (Jiangsu),
and Yue (Guangdong) have become the four most famous styles of embroidery. Each
is different from the other. Silk thread is used in most but some may use woolen
needlepoint, cotton embroidery, and embroidery with gold and silver thread.
Bunka, Japanese punch needle art embroidery involves embroidering
pictures on silk fabrics using rayon threads. The traditional embroidery
called shishu is done on fine silk fabric with flat colored silk
and metallic threads. It was introduced into Japan by the Korean
and Buddhists traind in the art by the Chinese. This is an art form
of refined elegance, symbolic significance and spiritual devotion,
utilizing the exquisite beauty of silk and metal threads.
For centuries silk has had a reputation as a luxurious and sensuous fabric,
one associated with wealth and success. Silk is one of the oldest textile fibers
known to man. It has been used by the Chinese since the 27th century BC. Embroidery
on silk makes it richer.
Kantha and Kasooti are two Indian embroidery forms that use silk
embroidery exclusively. Kasuti or Kasooti is followed in Karnataka
and Kantha in Orissa west Bengal and Biharuse silk fabrics and silk
or cotton threads with metal threads. The themes are religious or
the lives and thoughts of the crafts person along with some traditional
motifs.
