Applique

of the unique form of needlework is 'applique', in which a textile is decorated
by applying fabric on fabric with the edges sewn down by thread and needle. It
is often used with embroidery to create a magical style of decoration.
In
Andhra Pradesh, the blouses and headscarves embroidered and decorated with appliqué
and mirror work. In Gujarat the applique are in different geometric and floral
patterns and are then sewn on cotton cloth. In Orissa applique patterned fabric
are cut in varied shapes, sizes and colours and are sewn together on a plain background
to form motifs like peacocks, birds, horse riders and caparisoned elephants.
Applique work is now used on almost all things in fabric like clothes,
bed sheets, lampshades and wall hangings
Most notable is the applique work of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Orissa
in which pieces of coloured and Applique Embroidery of Rajasthan
includes Gota and Kinari work. Gota and kinari are golden and silver
colored pieces and laces that are sewn on the cloth. This art is
predominantly practiced by Muslim craftsmen.
